That search for perfection, his own predilection, goes on, gorgeously lit by this. [Feb 2015, p.99]

Ultimately, Avonmore functions as a well-deserved victory lap for both Ferry and those he’s assembled, triumphantly returning to relevance and reminding listeners he’s been doing this since the ‘70s.

Avonmore is all lush layers and quiet urgency with songs of love won and lost, offering a mesmerizing combination of sophistication, melancholy, and danceability.

Avonmore is classic, if not quite vintage, Ferry, lacking the distinctive songcraft of his finest work.

Naturally, what is first alluring about Avonmore is its feel--it's meant to be seductive--but the songs are what makes this record something more than a fling.

The faster Avonmore goes, the better it sounds. [Dec 2014, p.70]

His own compositions show his romantic disconnection and crepuscular charm is undimmed.

Save for a shaky cover of “Send in the Clowns”, Ferry remains as calm and collected as ever at the eye of these emotional storms.

Avondale is Ferry teasing at the possibility of something more and never quite delivering.

It holds its own but without the moments of genius to elevate it to anything more. There’s no ‘Love is the Drug’, no ‘More Than This’, no ‘Slave to Love’ here. Ferry’s fans though will enjoy this and, given this is a man that even Morrissey professes to enjoy, there are plenty of them to satisfy.

Ultimately, Avonmore is a fine addition to Bryan Ferry’s oeuvre, if not necessarily a terribly challenging one.

Though it may sound like something from his late-era Roxy days, it isn't on par with those classics. Still, Avonmore is evidence that--even as he approaches his 70th year on this planet--Ferry is certainly capable of recording primo baby-making music.

Avonmore doesn't quite match 2010's fine comeback solo album, Olympia. [Jan 2015, p.125]

The quieter moments that give his voice less to compete with are more interesting.

Opener "Loop De Li" alone credits six guitarists, including Nile Rodgers, Johnny Marr and Neil Hubbard, the latter a vet of Roxy Music's Avalon, a set this LP recalls in more than just name.

Nothing here quite matches up to his 70s/80s imperial phase, but Ferry still sounds admirably fresh, even five decades into his career.

Fittingly enjoyable but frustratingly retrograde effort.

Some musical movements and bands age well, and others don’t. For the most part, the sounds that Ferry references here fall into the latter category, though the album does have its bright moments.

No amount of heavy-friend noodling can redeem One Night Stand and Driving Me Wild, and Ferry's Send In The Clowns would have Krusty renouncing his vocation. [Dec 2014, p.88]

There is a remarkable melodicism and ease with which the album is embued that are more pronounced here than on Bryan's stunning Olympia. Thus far, the Avonmore has impressed me considerably, though I shall be returning soon here with a more comprehensive review. Full Review »

Bryan Ferry's latest, "Avonmore" may be drawn from previous successes as made infinitely obvious by all the criticism drawing that conclusion.Bryan Ferry's latest, "Avonmore" may be drawn from previous successes as made infinitely obvious by all the criticism drawing that conclusion. But, I say, so what? This new CD is a smart, stylish, polished recording that conjures up so much of what appeals to Ferry's listeners. Sure, the "Avalon" groove is apparent, but, I say again, so what! This is a disc I can put on and have the pleasure of relaxing to as Ferry croons his practiced, distinctive vocal. And while this recording also relies very heavily upon studio wizardry, I still find the music fascinating and have a strong suspicion that it will have far more staying power, style & content-wise than some critics believe to be the case. Frankly, this is no step back in time, just a new release that makes for a pleasant listen over and over. And its no less hip in case you're wondering, son! Full Review »
