Dec 23, 2014The album is a holiday classic in waiting, even if you don’t own a single pair of skinny jeans and couldn’t grow a beard to save your life.
-
Dec 9, 2014She & Him, the duo of Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward, cover a lot of ground here, rendering each song with warmth and radiance.
-
Dec 8, 2014Classics is meant to be pure entertainment and even though most of these songs have been sung before by a variety of other artists, in the hands of She & Him, it comes off less like a novelty and instead sits very comfortably in their growing catalog of fine releases.
-
Dec 9, 2014Classics presents these songs faithfully and inoffensively, and She & Him cover them with the best of intentions.
-
Dec 3, 2014Things get a little dicier when they dip into the ’60s, as Deschanel doesn’t have the pipes to match up with the likes of Maxine Brown and Bill Medley of the Righteous Brothers.... Throughout the rest of Classics, though, Deschanel is a delight, at times coy and romantic, and in other moments, moody and pensive.
-
Dec 2, 2014Considering the fact that classics on Classics have already been rendered hundreds of times by some of the most legendary musicians and singers of the last century, Deschanel and Ward's versions are surprisingly engaging.
-
Dec 2, 2014Some of the ramshackle charm that pervaded their Christmas record is missing here too--the major label money and the massive orchestra having presumably buffed the edges, which feels a shame. Still, all in, it’s a hard heart that dismisses a solid record of wonderful songs done well.
-
Dec 2, 2014Classics is charming and sleepy in a '60s samba sort of way, filled with whispering percussion, light electric guitar solos, and string arrangements worthy of the silver screen.
