Rather than functioning as simple b-side fodder, the four tracks which shape Earth Division are all totally different, yet just as essential as the album from which they were excluded.

Earth Division finds Mogwai in unusually calm and engaging mood, its four tracks for the most part eschewing their trademark surging post-rock in favour of a lighter, more reflective approach.

This is a case wherein open minds--and some patience--are likely to be rewarded.
  4. 70
It's by no means a progressive statement for a band long revered for its innovation and influence, but Earth Division is still a fine compendium of Mogwai's prowess with more sedate atmospheres.

Earth Division is more interesting than satisfying, but it's difficult to dismiss its beauty and its reach past the band's comfort level.

Aside from a sneak peek at LP number eight though, Earth Division doesn't offer much of anything new to listeners.

They simply begin, evolve, repeat, and end, very much as though they were designed to play out while we directed our attention elsewhere.
