Finding new ways to speak old truths. I think that’s why we may be here. I think that’s what Phil and Julie find as they wing and waver their voices around the songs of Lost Wisdom pt. 2.

It all adds up to a cycle that is as complex as it is direct at times, describing the imbalances between moments of lucidity and desire, and what is lost or gained when one declares "let's get out of the romance."

The lyrical reference points are no less poignant for their obvious subjects; occasionally the poetry drops out altogether, most notably when Elverum reverts to his now-traditional laments about the Internet, commercial media, and technology at large.

Though Lost Wisdom, Pt. 2 readily picks up themes and images present in 2008’s Pt. 1, the album just as often gestures toward the poetic abstractions of Elverum’s work with The Microphones as it does the memoiristic approach to A Crow Looked At Me. In effect, that makes this album the easiest point of entry to the Mount Eerie discography in a decade, unburdened (but no doubt enhanced) by self-mythologizing.

Though it's a smaller-scale work than either A Crow Looked at Me or Now Only, Lost Wisdom pt. 2 is filled with just as much insight and compassion.

Lost Wisdom pt. 2 is instinctually faithful in tone musically to the first, though there are stretches of mournful piano, brushed drums and even frustrated punctuations of noise, and the overall production is a touch cleaner.

Though not as viscerally crushing as A Crow Looked At Me, Lost Wisdom Pt 2 is as plainly poetic. [Jan 2020, p.27]

It is a record that keeps listeners in mind, attempting to make sense of all of these painful feelings and moments in order to offer all-encompassing advice on life’s fleeting nature and on whether or not it’s still worth investing in love.

However exquisitely rendered they may be, and however strange their circumstances may seem, these are breakup songs. ... Doiron’s presence, though, is a welcome balm, warming these cold realizations and offering Elverum a steadying hand for some of the most difficult moments.

Several releases later, Elverum is still meditating on grief and grace with poignancy on this hyper-literal album.

Though not quite closure, ‘Lost Wisdom Pt. 2’ is the sound of Mount Eerie reaching clarity.

It’s a hard place to go with him; confrontationally stark, it may be the rare album that works better on paper.

Even with 'Mount Eerie' and his intentionally wack lyrics, 'Lost Wisdom, Pt. 2' is lost... not in an artistic way but a confusing one. Many of the songs instrumentals are ambient and great for listening to in the background but Mr. Eerie likes to take over their beauty with absurdity that ultimately clashes and ruins what was originally captivating about them. 'Belief', the intro, is pretty good. However, it would of been better if it ended around the 4 or 5 minute mark. 'Love Without Possession' and 'Belief Pt. 2' are a breath of fresh air on this album. 'Eerie' and 'Doiron' flow in between each others vocals and allow time for the instrumentals to evolve through the entirety of their respective tracks. I would be glad if these two artists paired up again if they were able to pull of this same talent on another album. However, the amount of misses on this album make this thing feel like a flop. 'Real Lost Wisdom' is by far the worst track. Its not exactly terrible, its just not good. it's boring and could of easily been cut from the track list. The only problem is; if these types of 'boring' tracks were cut from the album, it would barely makeup a track list for an EP. This project has some ambition in it but further into its tracks, its hard to figure out if their lyrics are meaningful or created off the top of their heads. Full Review »
