Caligula club music and nothing but, Stay Trippy is a pimp party of the highest order.

Stay Trippy is a record that knows to stay within the lane that it’s carved for itself. Big-budget stripper rap has rarely sounded so fresh.

Stay Trippy may not be the album you play for doubters to prove the artistic merits of hip-hop, and its subject matter wears thin after a while, but damn if it doesn't sound good loud.

[He] sticks to the basic formula: modernizations of the sort of proto-trap Memphis riot music that defined his early career... but never transcendent. [Nov 2013, p.66]

His major-label solo debut is a parade of jams involving weed, drank and sketchy sex, with Cheech & Chong punch lines exhaled over fat stoner beats.

Stay Trippy distills the sonic extremes of contemporary hip-hop into a potent hybrid of radio-friendly sheen and hard-knocking street fatalism.

For all its vulgarity, predictability, repetitiveness and reckless musings on drugs, Juicy J's trippy music succeeds because of its spirit. His new album (his first since trading 666 for Taylor Gang) bottles that infectious energy, that reckless intensity, that raw hustler's "kapow!" and delivers it in an accessible package.

While the sense of humor that separates him from someone like Gucci Mane emerges at times, the brief grins are not quite enough to distract from the relentless, repetitive tropes that have come to define Juicy’s (and the rest of the rap game’s) lyrics over the past few years.

Existing within that world that overlooks lyrical competence or any moral deficiencies, there are enough instances where the veteran’s effortless style starts veering too close to effort-less.

Production, shared by J, Young Chop and Mike WiLL Made-It among others, at times subtly nods to the menacing beats of early Three 6 Mafia but is otherwise bland.

I wish he had "One Of Those Nights" featuring The Weeknd on the standard edition, but instead, he's got it on the Best Buy deluxe. That songI wish he had "One Of Those Nights" featuring The Weeknd on the standard edition, but instead, he's got it on the Best Buy deluxe. That song is awesome. Overall, Stay Trippy is a good at producing strip club joints, but other than that, it swings ad misses frequently. However, for what it is, it could have been a lot worse. Full Review »

He has talent as a producer, and as a rapper too. His lyrics aren't the most special but they're humorous. Him, Lex Luger, Mike Will Made It, among others help the production on this album shine. This album gets a B from me. Highlights: "Gun Plus a Mask" (helped by its Yelawolf feature), "All I Blow Is Loud". Worst song: "The Woods" Full Review »
