Hunter is glorious and triumphant, a record that succeeds on any terms you try to force upon it.

More than just grafting on its politics and themes of liberation, Hunter embodies them by capturing a freer, more complex--and queerer--view of its creator. Anna Calvi is on the loose.

To be clear, on Hunter Anna Calvi is not simply meeting male musicians on their common ground and outperforming them; rather, she's defining a new geography and daring everyone to follow. It's the lioness, after all, who is the true hunter.

This is the album we've been waiting for, whether we knew it or not.
  5. This is an album of extremes, but they’re all bridged by bold and fluid movements of an artist refusing to be either man, woman or victim--always the hunter.

Twice nominated for Britain’s Mercury Prize, Calvi has consistently delivered brilliant albums. This new era of openness only serves to push her to more relevant and engaging levels.

Overall, this is a powerful statement from a laudably liberated artist. A record red in tooth and claw.

Hunter is the record where, more than any other, Calvi's talents have fully crystallized. The true character of her music has been unleashed and will likely see all those PJ Harvey comparisons finally fade, eclipsed by the radiance of this tough yet open-hearted work.

Hunter is a tempestuous album full of haunting, unsettling vocals; it resonates with evocative power.
  10. 80
Three excellent albums in, Calvi has produced her most complex work to date.

There's a wildness to it, a predatory snarl as it bares its teeth and chases down new ways of expressing desire, different ways of being. [Sep 2018, p.112]

Calvi remains in firm control on Hunter, but she lets loose more than enough moments of bliss to satisfy.

A soaring, feverish conflagration of sense and sensuality. [Sep 2018, p.90]

Anna Calvi has found her voice with her third album would be reductive; both literally and figuratively, her voice has always been crystal clear.

Her’s is a sound that’s daunting and distinctive, brash yet beguiling.

It’s Calvi’s most complete record yet. It grasps the catchiness of her debut, and kneads in an increased sense of maturity in her delivery of topical subjects, brought together with seasoned production and her expectedly dexterous, mighty voice.

There's still a lingering sense of promise not quite fulfilled about Anna Clavi, such that Hunter feels like a make or break album. [Oct 2018, p.24]

By revealing the full spectrum of her sexual expression and identity, she makes a bold and defiant statement on postgenderism through uncompromising music that's alternately elegant and raw.
  19. 60
She still struggles to throw off what must now be very tiresome PJ Harvey comparisons. That said, this is very much a resonant record, set in the here and now, with melodies to the fore.

With its high concepts and bold instrumentals the album feels a little heavy at times, but you really can’t fault its ambition.

Anna Calvi(n) Klein given us not just a great pop album, but a piece of music.

"Hunter" is superb vocally and has some great tunes to go with it however there are just a couple of genuine standout songs here. The production values, themes and lush/dirty mood created go some way to making up for this and it is a record that stands out from other solo songwriter records in 2018 (not a particularly vintage year). "Don't Beat the Girl Out of My Boy" a particular highlight along with the James Bondesque "Swimming Pool" and brilliant closer "Eden". Full Review »
