Jun 13, 2016His new record, Last Year Was Complicated, grows into the neon pop-R&B sound of 2014’s Nick Jonas while adopting a show-don’t-tell approach to maturity on songs like with the break-up toast “Champagne Problems” and the Max Martin-produced “Under You,” whose similarities to Taylor Swift’s “Style” would be more troubling if the track wasn’t just as much fun.

Jun 17, 2016This is Jonas’ complication: talking his way into, and then through, sexual minefields. The theme suits his peculiar pipes--the jutted-jaw pout, the texture he scratches into his more insistent notes--which, in turn, take the burden from the compositions.

Jun 10, 2016As a singer, Jonas never exactly overwhelms a listener with charisma or technique, but he's personable and versatile, equally at home confessing a fear of intimacy over simulated steel drums and a tick-tock rhythm on the Tove Lo duet "Close" as he is teaming with Ty Dolla $ign to celebrate the single life on "Bacon."

Jun 16, 2016While the result is a 12-track standard edition full of potential hits, the brunt of it rests on interchangeable tempos from existing, already-charting singles.
