His new record, Last Year Was Complicated, grows into the neon pop-R&B sound of 2014’s Nick Jonas while adopting a show-don’t-tell approach to maturity on songs like with the break-up toast “Champagne Problems” and the Max Martin-produced “Under You,” whose similarities to Taylor Swift’s “Style” would be more troubling if the track wasn’t just as much fun.

The best songs here to showcase Jonas as an artist come toward the end, when Last Year Was Complicated trends away from its production excesses.

As a singer, Jonas never exactly overwhelms a listener with charisma or technique, but he's personable and versatile, equally at home confessing a fear of intimacy over simulated steel drums and a tick-tock rhythm on the Tove Lo duet "Close" as he is teaming with Ty Dolla $ign to celebrate the single life on "Bacon."

This is Jonas’ complication: talking his way into, and then through, sexual minefields. The theme suits his peculiar pipes--the jutted-jaw pout, the texture he scratches into his more insistent notes--which, in turn, take the burden from the compositions.

While the result is a 12-track standard edition full of potential hits, the brunt of it rests on interchangeable tempos from existing, already-charting singles.

There are many quirks to this glossy, compelling record, but unlike Justin Timberlake, who forged his name as a solo act by his affiliation with the Neptunes, it’s not savvy or strange enough to stand out.

While Last Year Was Complicated is completely adequate, its highlights are a SparkNotes summary of the pop music from the past 12 months.

This album is cohosive and every track has it's charm, being my 3 favorite: Chainsaw, Close and Touch. I think the album has much quality and makes Nick seeming like the king of diverses genres: pop, r&b, eletronic, disc, funk, urban, dance and others. I guess it's not good comparing this one to his debut, once this review is for just the album and not a comparision between them. But if it wants my opinion I think both has the same high level. This is, for theWell, this is certainly better than what I was expecting from Nick Jonas, but it's definitely not a standout album to me. This is, for the most part, very anonymous, generic 2016 pop music. The nice thing is that with maybe one or two exceptions, there really aren't any songs that are downright bad, but everything is really so formulaic and similar that I suppose that's not much of a feat. Interestingly enough, the biggest standout in my opinion is Under You, which is one of two songs on the album Jonas had no part in writing. Overall, I'd say this is a decent pop album, especially if you're in the right mood, but it doesn't really pique my interest. Expand
