Postpunk, hardcore, krautrock and odd, spacey lounge-jazz are all sucked up and bent brilliantly out of shape over the course of an album that's abrasive but accessible, awkward but assured. Properly special stuff.

As their name suggests, they have all the control over the music, and how they channel that is through wonderful anarchy.

If this is the end of whatever this is, they’ve recorded a superlative piece of work which leaves us on one hell of a high, despite it sounding anything but high itself.

What they're doing with their new wave affectations and post-punk sheen is absolutely creative and often subversive.

No matter what your favorite post-punk record is, you'll hear hints of it here. The fact Total Control still sounds fresh and new also ensures they may even become a new favorite as well.
  6. Hopefully Total Control can continue because, brutal as it is, Typical System is the year's finest punk album.

Taken in one healthy, heroic dose, Typical System feels like a dazzling glimpse into the future of underground rock. [Jul 2014, p.102]

Even with their most aesthetically orthodox track, Total Control's total message is radical.

What becomes clear is that, even when it is uneven, Typical Systems succeeds on good songcraft and—most importantly--heavy and convincing emotional weight. It’s an album that takes a toll, and then invites you back to take it on again.

Their free form approach is certainly amusing, perhaps too cerebral at times, but that’s just another way of reinforcing they want us to figure out what they’re aiming for.

The five-piece isn’t interested in comfort, but rather an intensity created directly by that push-pull exchange, their strangely humorous song titles, and primitive, warlike lyrics.
