It’s beautifully conflicted and human, and does provide a unique and unforgettable experience that will continue to charm with its paradoxical qualities for years to come.

Rocket is a true tour de force that cements (Sandy) Alex G snugly in the company of indie rock's great auteurs.

Giannascoli’s work stands on its own, never more so than on Rocket, a 14-track travelogue of the 24-year-old’s varied interests.

Sometimes, there really is no substitute for the revelations that come when an artist unlocks the mysteries of their work. But it’s certainly the reason why Rocket feels like one of the year’s most endlessly generous records, as Alex G’s restraint is our gift that keeps on giving.

Even though Rocket sometimes feels messy, only a songwriter as prolific and uninhibited as Giannascoli can make the chaos this thrilling and affecting.

As inscrutable as it can be at times, Giannascoli never betrays his purpose, making Rocket his most developed and accomplished album yet.

The raw and at times, ferocious navigation of the album soars in its earnest delivery and marks a career-defining release for (Sandy) Alex G.

Alex G’s skill is in tackling difficult subjects and squeezing them into the most wonderful kernels of pop, and once again, he’s succeeded here.

It's unpolished and emotionally brave, in touch and free as the wind. It's really something. Quite a bedroom window, this one.

Slowing down and refining his output has allowed Alex the time to make Rocket a brilliantly considered next step. It’s also his catchiest record yet.

It is at times unpleasant, but Rocket has no ambitions to score a dinner party. The frantic interchanging of emotions--like the internal monologue of someone with a hellish hangover at ATP in 2009--is a challenging, ambitious progression.

He's far from catering to the mainstream here, but through it all, the wistful chords and progressions that are such a trademark of his sound act as a sonic through-line. Also uniting the album are immediate, conversational vocals and, similarly, an impression that accompaniment is gathered in a circle playing along by ear.

Rocket weaves a patchwork of complex emotions experienced by (Sandy) Alex G and his friends. The album is reaffirming and disheartening at the same time.

There are occasions which suggest he has overreached himself slightly leaving a sometimes unbalanced album. Nonetheless, it remains an album that deserves to be heard and one which sees him heading somewhere very special.

Rocket hits enough of the right spots; there are a few really great songs, there are some tremendous arrangements, and it showcases Alex’s versatility and creativity, demonstrating once again that he is full of ideas and unafraid to try them out.

There's a less scrappy approach on this album, a glossier production with more realised and experimental offerings. [Jun 2017, p.28]

An album that ultimately sounds curiously disengaged.

This reminds me of a Guided By Voices record (which 90s lo-fi indie rock is a clear influence on Alex here), especially considering the mish mash of songs here, and there are plently of standout singer-songwriter material, and just songs in general, like Proud, Bobby, Witch, Judge, and Powerful Man. However, the major issue with the album is the coherency of the record. Namely, there is none. It just shifts from 90s indie rock tunes to weird interludes to whatever the heck Alex wants to put on the record. It's a bit of a mix bag, but I am liking what I'm hearing. Full Review »
