If they’ve perfected the modern pop template associated with acts like SOPHIE (on production duties here) - and they have - it’s somehow not the most impressive element of the record. The second half of the album includes a pair of breathtaking epics, ‘Cool & Collected’ and ‘Donnie Darko’, that showcase a songwriting maturity well beyond their 18 and 19 years.

In short, it’s a shining example of personal and musical growth. There’s something to be said for toeing the line between fervent experimentation and enjoyable song craft; here, Let’s Eat Grandma walk it effortlessly.

I’m All Ears renders flattened communication as poignant, striking not because of the novelty of being made by teenagers but because it speaks with such commanding precision to the experience of a teenager in 2018.

Reflecting Walton and Hollingworth’s growth and maturation over a period of approximately two years, it is a creative and infectious record, which after repeat listens, moves from being intriguing to simply irresistible.

A great way to approach I’m All Ears is by thinking of it as a jam session, where both Walton and Hollingworth experiment news ways of making music and detailing experience. It allows for a mishmash of elements and influences to come together in a bizarre and ultimately rewarding experience.

It should be stressed as bluntly as possible, then, that Jenny Hollingworth and Rosa Walton haven’t “just” made a good album for a couple of teenagers; I’m All Ears is pretty damn good for Rambo.

Depending on your taste for that kind of home-brewed, distinctively British weirdness, I’m All Ears is either a massive leap forwards or a sad lurch towards the middle-ground.
  10. Two years ago, such a mis-match of styles usually resulted in dizzying chaos for the duo, here it’s inventive and enjoyable as they capture teenage life with devastating precision.

It’s a radical evolution that keeps true to their idiosyncratic voice, and amounts to a textbook example of how to do weird pop well.

Their stylistic shifts never feel contrived, especially when the results are as stunning as "Cool & Collected."

Measured and calm where ‘I, Gemini’ was erratic, and packing some of the strongest pop punches we’ve heard in yonks, Let’s Eat Grandma look like they could go anywhere from here.

It’s a thrill to listen to their experiments, their tinkering with sounds and ideas.

As a record that’s as lyrically compelling as it is sonically daring, I’m All Ears is an admirable follow-up to an impressive debut.

If the circus-field antics are superseded by darker, sleeker dance-floor shapes, it remains a volatile, persistently disconcerting record. [Jul 2018, p.93]

These are sprightly, assured, gratifying pop songs, pirouetting with enough agitated inventiveness to ensure each run is sunny, surprising, and fluently fun; a damn fine Summer record.

“Hot Pink” reads clearly like “BIPP”-era SOPHIE, with its urgent metallic breakdowns and deep, heavy bass lines, while the high synth registers and spatial ambient of “It’s Not Just Me” conjecture a Generation Z folk-pop-disco hybrid. As a more mainstream addition to the avant-pop trajectory of artists like SOPHIE and felicita, however, Let’s Eat Grandma are not nearly as disruptive and original. [Sep 2018, p.49]

Ultimately it’s the spirit of adventure that runs through the entire enterprise that makes the diversity feel perfectly coherent, and timely. The future, after all, belongs to the young.

Satisfying as both a sophomore effort and streamlined pop album, I'm All Ears establishes Let's Eat Grandma as a band that need to be heard.

Those two ["Cool & Collected" and "Donnie Darko"] towers loom over an otherwise sterile pop album, which lacks the hidden barbs and hazy ambiguity that drew Let's Eat Grandma's cult following.

The singles were mostly amazing tracks, but the album ultimately falls short in its second half and suffers from a considerable amount of filler.

The tracks Cool & Collected and Donnie Darko are unreasonably long for how lackluster they are. While excellent lyricism abounds, the instrumentals of these tracks are awkward and don't fit the theme. Songs like It's Not Just Me and I Will Be Waiting capture the feelings of longing and take the listener on an emotional journey that half of the album just can't seem to reproduce.

The album's synthwave opener, Whitewater, clears the way for Hot Pink, an angsty and powerful embrace of self-expression. Ava, while not too bad of a single, doesn't really fit in with the rest of the album at all--putting it all together should make you realize that this kind of ballad just takes away from the experience. The two instrumental breaks bring the pace to a jarring and confusing halt, and are completely unnecessary. As individual songs, most--if not all--of the tracks on I'm All Ears are solid, but combined exhibit little more than a case of mistaken identity.

The second half of this album is possibly one of the finest examples of a good idea executed poorly. It's something special, but it doesn't really blow other art-pop acts out of the park. It's clear that Let's Eat Grandma have the potential to do so, with more refinement and organization.

Best Tracks: It's Not Just Me, Falling Into Me, Hot Pink
    Worst Track: Cool & Collected
